Climb Chimborazo

Destination Details
The Chimborazo Climb Extension is the ultimate finale to your Ecuador mountaineering adventure. Over four days, you’ll journey from the historic haciendas of the central highlands to the icy summit of Ecuador’s tallest volcano—Chimborazo, standing at 6268 m. This extension is designed for climbers who’ve already summited Cotopaxi and are ready to push higher. You’ll rest and recover in the peaceful surroundings of a local hacienda  before traveling south along the Pan‑American Highway to Chimborazo National Park. From there, the climb unfolds gradually—first to the refuge, then to high camp on the west ridge, and finally to the Whymper Summit, the closest point on Earth to the sun. It’s a demanding ascent, but one that rewards every step with sweeping Andean views and the satisfaction of standing atop Ecuador’s highest peak.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1
Descend from Cotopaxi and Recover
You’ve just summited Cotopaxi—time to swap crampons for comfort. Your driver whisks you off to a local hacienda, a 300‑year‑old countryside hideaway that’s basically the Andes’ version of a spa day. Kick back, wander the gardens, breathe that crisp mountain air, and let your legs remember what “relax” feels like. Tomorrow, the next volcano awaits.
Day 2
Road Trip to the Roof of Ecuador
Sleep in, sip your coffee, and then hit the legendary Pan‑American Highway—aka the spine of the Andes. You’ll cruise past epic scenery and maybe spot a few wild vicuñas doing their best llama impressions. By evening, you’ll roll up to the refuge at the base of Chimborazo, Ecuador’s tallest volcano and your next big bragging right.
Day 3
Camp Above the Clouds
Time to ditch the extra gear and head for high camp. The trail climbs steady and strong to a tucked‑away perch on Chimborazo’s west ridge. It’s got everything you need—mountain views, crisp air, and a sunset that’ll make you forget Wi‑Fi exists. Hydrate, carb‑load, and get some shut‑eye. The big climb starts at midnight.
Day 4
Summit Day
It’s go time. Alarms go off at midnight. From high camp, you’ll grind your way to the saddle at 5500 m, then tackle the glacier head‑on. It’s steep, it’s relentless, and it’s the kind of climb that makes your legs question your life choices—in the best way possible. Hours later, the slope finally eases, and you step onto the massive summit plateau. Keep going until you hit the Whymper Summit, the highest point in Ecuador and the closest spot on Earth to the sun. Take it in, snap the photo, then head down through high camp to the refuge. By nightfall, you’ll be back in Quito, swapping stories and calories at your celebration dinner.
