Destination Details

The E4 Trail through Bulgaria – known as the Five Mountains Trail – is part of Europe’s most spectacular long-distance routes. Over 260 kilometers it traverses 5 distinct mountain ranges: Vitosha, Verila, Rila, Pirin, and Slavyanka. Starting in the capital city, Sofia, and finishing at Gotsev Peak on the Greek border, this trail showcases the full spectrum of Bulgarian mountain terrain (some of the most stunning in the entire European continent).

This isn’t a casual hiking vacation. The E4 demands good physical condition, trekking experience, and respect for mountain conditions. Rocky ridges, boulder fields, significant elevation gains, and alpine exposure make this route a legitimate challenge. But for those ready to earn their views, the rewards are extraordinary.

The E4 Trail through Bulgaria isn’t just about conquering 5 mountain ranges spanning 260 kilometers (161 miles). It is about connecting – to landscapes that humble you, to guides who know and love these paths, to fellow adventurers who become your trail family, and ultimately, to a stronger version of yourself – inside and out.

With every YOLO DAT adventure, all experiences, adventures, and itineraries are fully customizable to meet your personalized needs, wants, and desires for your trip! This is just a starting point to your Dream Adventure!

Mountain hut conditions vary from basic (outside toilets, cold showers) to excellent (private bathrooms, hot water). We consider this part of the authentic Bulgarian mountain experience. The huts are really remarkable, unique, and special in their own way – and add so much to this epic trekking experience.

The Adventure At A Glance

A quick look at some of the activities that shape this adventure.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Bulgaria! After your airport transfer, settle into your centrally-located hotel in the capital. Tonight we’ll review the route, check our gear, and introduce your guids for the epic days ahead. The adventure is about to begin!

Day 2

A day in Sofia is the perfect contrast to the high mountains that follow. You wander wide cobblestone boulevards where Roman ruins sit beneath modern streets, step inside the gold-domed grandeur of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and hear church bells echo across the city. Cafés spill onto shaded sidewalks, local markets buzz with fresh bread and produce, and the scent of strong Bulgarian coffee follows you from stop to stop. In the afternoon, you can hike the lower slopes of Vitosha for sweeping views back over the capital. Sofia feels layered, lived-in, and refreshingly unpolished — a grounded, cultural start before stepping fully into Bulgaria’s mountain terrain.

Day 3

Start your trek with a bang as you climb out of Sofia and into Vitosha National Park (Bulgaria’s oldest). You’ll walk the winding trail through pine forests and alpine meadows toward the iconic Cherni Vrah, where the wind whips across the open plateau and the city sprawls far below. It’s the perfect warm-up and taste of the highs to come.

Day 4

Wave goodbye to city comforts as you cross into the lesser-known Verila Mountains. This is a land of dirt roads, open fields, and quiet pine groves. Water is scarce, so fill up early. As the sun dips behind Rila’s looming silhouette, you’ll arrive at the humble but hearty Lovna Hut — your first true night in the wild. A hot meal and the hushed peace of the forest await you.

Day 5

You’ll climb higher today, with the tree line fallign aways as views of the 7 Rila Lakes come into sight. You’re now deep in Rila, Eastern Europe’s highest range. The day opens up with lush forest trails before climbing steadily toward rocky outcrops and alpine lakes. Mist drifts across the peaks and wild horses graze on high plateaus. Tonight’s rest is at the freshly renovated Malyovitsa Hut — cozy, clean, and nestled beneath the granite giants.

Day 6

Today is a long and tough one… but what a reward! You’ll hike from lake to lake, past stone shelters, up to airy ridgelines and down into hidden valleys. You may see your breath even in summer, and a dip in an icy alpine lake could be the perfect recharge. By the end of the day, you’ll reach the Ribni Lakes Hut, surrounded by glacial beauty. Tonight’s shelter is a little rough around the edges, but it’s full of alpine soul.

Day 7

This is high-country heaven! Climb past Angel’s Peak and out to the rolling highlands of central Rila. Water is limited so stock up early. Wild blueberries dot the trail in summer. No technical challenges today, just smooth walking through gorgeous landscapes. The day ends at Makedoniya Hut — remote, rustic, and full of character. You’ll find delight in a hot meal and cozy rest in this valley hideaway.

Day 8

After a brief climb, you’ll spend most of the day contouring the southern ridge of Rila. It’s long but gentle, and the views across the Pirin Mountains will pull you forward. Kapatnik Peak is your last big climb in Rila, before you descend in the beautiful green divine between Rila and Pirin. Tonight’s reward is Predela Hut — the most comfortable on the route with hot showers, private bathrooms, and a well-stocked tavern for a celebratory meal.

Day 9

Cross into Pirin National Park, where you’ll see a terrain shift of a rugged realm of marble peaks and old-growth forests. The ascent takes you back into the alpine zone, with wide-open views and golden light across distant summits. This is an area of vast beauty. Yavorov Hut is a welcome sight at the end of the day, warm and well-kept beneath the stars.

Day 10

One of the most thrilling stages on the E4. Why? Steel cables and chains guide you along narrow trails carved into the face of Kutelo. With steep drops on either side, this section isn’t for the faint of heart — but the views of Vihren Peak and the surrounding Pirin ridgelines are absolutely unforgettable. Next you’ll hit Vihren Peak, Bulgaria’s 2nd-highest summit and also sacred to many locals. Finally, you’ll descend to Vihren hut – likely tired, but lit up by the immense grandeur of today’s trekking.

Day 11

Start early and breathe deep: today is pure alpine gold! Traverse past Koncheto Ridge and descend into a valley of glacial lakes, jagged peaks, and pristine silence. Lunch beside Tevno Lake is a highlight, where reflections of Kamenitza Peak shimmer in the water. Tonight’s shelter is simple, but the setting is nothing short of extraordinary. Consider a freezing cold “foot spa” in the alpine waters, or maybe catch a shooting star falling through the night sky.

Day 12

Take it slow as you descend from high alpine terrain to Pirin’s lush southern slopes. You’ll pass cow-dotted pastures, ancient pine forests, and quiet meadows. The short hike gives you time to rest, wash up, and get ready for the final mountain push.

Day 13

This is one of the more demanding stages,  but it’s worth every step. Climb through thick forest and out to ridgelines with wide, sweeping views of the southern Pirin range. The trail passes Orelyak Peak and rolls through quiet terrain where you’ll rarely see another person besides those in your group. The trail is quiet here, and introspective. Popovi Livadi Hut welcomes you at the end of the day. It is a cozy outpost surrounded by thick green woods.

Day 14

Welcome to Slavyanka, the fifth and final range on this journey! The trail winds through deep forest, then climbs to exposed ridges alongside the Bulgarian-Greek (Bulgaria-Greece?)  border. Slavyanka Hut is your last stop in the mountains —this is a beautifully renovated border post with real beds, hot water, and a sense of arrival. You’re almost done!

Day 15

This is it! It’s all led to this. You’ll climb steadily to Gotsev Peak, where a panoramic sweep of 22 mountain ranges — from Greece to North Macedonia — waits for you. Soak it in! Then, descend to Izvora Hut, where your bus is waiting. Tonight, celebrate in Melnik, Bulgaria’s tiniest town, famous for its wine and sun-carved sand pyramids.

Day 16

On the way back to Sofia, stop to explore Rila Monastery — a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 1,000 years of history. Spend your final night in the capital with a farewell dinner to toast your incredible achievement. You now have new friends that have become trail family, and memories that will last a lifetime from the last 13 days of trekking.

Day 17

After breakfast, transfer to the airport based on your flight schedule. Time to say goodbye — for now! (This is often when the next adventure is already calling your name)
