Destination Details

Off the southern coast of Japan lies Yakushima Island, a subtropical island wrapped in mist, myth, and moss. It’s home to some of the oldest trees in the world, wild rivers that tumble through gorgeous emerald valleys, and a coastline where sea turtles return every year to nest.

This 6-day journey immerses you in the raw, living magic of Yakushima. You’ll hike through ancient cedar forests, climb high ridgelines with panoramic views, paddle wild rivers, and soak in the rhythm of island life. It’s a place where the weather changes by the hour, time slows, and nature commands your attention. It’s one of our favorite destinations and a place we are honored to bring guests to.

We live in a fast-paced, high-stress world. In Yakushima, each day is designed for full-body presence: from cool morning swims in mountain streams to trail lunches beneath towering trees and warm meals at local restaurants. This is an experience that feeds the soul as much as it challenges the body. It’s an adventure, but it’s also a reset.

For travelers who want something deeper than sightseeing, this is it.

The Adventure At A Glance

A quick look at some of the activities that shape this adventure.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

You’ll fly into Yakushima beneath a ceiling of mist that you often find on this island. After a short transfer, you will check in to your hotel nestled between the sea and forest. That evening, a traditional Kaiseki meal awaits you with delicate flavors and beautiful presentation.

Day 2

The first full day starts at Nagata Beach, where smooth black sands meet wild surf (this is where sea turtles nest). A forest walk follows, filled with lush and layered greenery and nature, and humming with seen and unseen life. It’s truly spectacular. By midday you’ll be tracing the fabled Seibu Rindo road: cliffs to one side, rainforest to the other. You end with dinner in a local spot where the food is simple, seasonal, and deeply satisfying. There’s something about the food in Japan that make it impossible to get enough! This is definitely a highlight of the trip.

Day 3

This morning begins in a kayak, where you have the opportunity to drift and paddle quietly along the Kurio River, and take in the majesty of the land and water around you. Later, you’ll climb up through the river itself – think: scrambling over rocks, splashing under waterfalls, and tapping into childlike play and wonder! This is a stunning and magical spot. We’ll have lunch on the riverbank, then get chartered back to the hotel.

Day 4

Before dawn, you’ll begin a long ascent into Yakushima’s sacred interior. This is a very special day. Trails wind through high-elevation wetlands, where clouds hang low and silence feels reverent. You’ll summit Mt. Kuromidake, 6,007 feet above sea level, and eat lunch near the top, boots off, legs aching, heart full. Tonight you sleep in a mountain hut! Think: raw beauty of the ridgeline, under the stars.

Day 5

Day 5’s descent brings you back through forests and back into village life. You’ll visit a traditional distillery and sip local shochu, then have the opportunity to wander shops that sell handmade crafts, including cedar carvings, pottery, woven goods. At this shop owned by a lovely local family, you have the ability to do an intimate workshop to make something yourself out of cedar, and keep it as a special and sacred memento from the trip.  A farewell lunch marks a contemplative moment: the trip is ending (or you’re preparing for the following adventure in Japan), but it’s likely that something in you has shifted by this point. There’s something about spots like this that really bring about a sense of peace, calm, and gratitude. We can’t say enough about how special it is.

6

Your final breakfast will be quiet and peaceful after these last 5 beautiful days. The sea is near, and everything can feel a bit more vivid after such an immersion. You’ll board a ferry or plane to leave today. This is the kind of trip that lingers as you (a) make your way back into your regular life or (b) prepare for another destination and activity in Japan. We can’t wait to bring you on this adventure.
